Storm Update

NAPPANEE -- The food pantry set up at the Nappanee Missionary Church is in need of baby food and formula, hygiene items, coffee, tea, peanut butter, jelly, toilet paper and paper towels. Volunteers said donations are being accepted at the church, located at 7417 S.R. 19.

Residents are being asked to stay indoors as night falls and are encouraged to contact the American Red Cross if they need assistance with food, water or shelter. A boil order is still in effect due to low water pressure, said Tony Slocum, a spokesman from the Indiana State Police. Slocum said anyone found in areas that have been sealed by emergency crews will be arrested.

U.S. 6 from S.R. 19 to C.R. 9 and S.R. 19 from C.R. 50 to C.R. 1350 N. will remain closed through Saturday a may not reopen for a few days, Slocum said.

Those interested in helping with the clean-up process can volunteer to do so at 10 a.m. Sunday. Volunteers are asked to meet at the NorthWood High School parking lot, 2101 N. Main St., and should bring their own gloves and wear thick-soled, sturdy shoes. Children younger than 13 will need to be accompanied by a legal guardian. Transportation to work sites will be provided.

The Red Cross can be reached at 293-6519. For emergencies, call 911.
