It was announced today that Nappanee, which was denied disaster assistance from FEMA, will receive assistance from the Indiana Disaster Relief Fund. Governor Mitch Daniels was present to present the check himself, saying, "Here in Indiana, we don't wait on Washington. We don't wait on anyone. We help each other."
Over $600,000 had already been raised for assistance to city residents but the city of Nappanee faced a $400,000 deficit after insurance coverage as a result of the October tornado. The $200,000 received from the state will cut that deficit in half. The money received will help reimburse the city for the costs of debris removal and fixing public roads, buildings and other damaged infrastructure.
The Indiana Disaster Relief Fund was created in 2006 and this is the first ever grant from the Fund.
