Two Years Ago Today

One of the most severe storms to hit Northern Indiana during the month of October was on October 18th, 2007 in Nappanee. The EF3 tornado hit Nappanee around 10:19pm, causing extensive damage along its 20 mile path. It moved from northeast Marshall county, then into northwest Kosciusko county, and then across southwest Elkhart county. This tornado had estimated winds near 165 mph. As it moved out of Nappanee, it weakened to an EF0.

In the town of Nappanee, over 100 structures sustained significant damage or were destroyed. Roofs were ripped off of homes, power lines were blown over, trees were uprooted, and exterior walls of buildings were destroyed. Despite the fact that this tornado occurred late in the evening, only minor injuries, consisting of mainly bumps, bruises and cuts, were reported.
