On the same day that the new NorthWood High School basketball coach was hired, the school board announced that there will be no new hires and some teachers will be moved to other grades and schools. Superintendent Joe Sabo stated, "Class sizes will go up." To date, 11 teachers and 3 non-certified staff have resigned or given retirement notice. Positions vacated by retiring teachers will not be filled with new hires. Fourth and fifth grade classes at Woodview elementary and second and third grade classes at Nappanee elementary will decrease from four sections to three sections at each school.
No reason was given as to why there was money to expand elementary buildings with new classrooms this past year and cut teachers and class sections (increasing students in each classroom) this year. Also no reason given for hiring a new basketball coach while putting a hiring freeze on hiring elementary teachers.
